Among all others, I would like to congratulate Professor Frank Chen Youhua, Head of the Department of Management Sciences, on his appointment as Chair Professor. Professor Chen is well deserved of this senior appointment. A distinguished scholar, Professor Chen has published extensively in premier journals. His research has been impactful, including leading a Theme-based Research project on healthcare operations management, and a major National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) research project on transport logistics. Under Professor Chen’s strong leadership, we also see that the Department of Management Sciences takes great leap in both research and education.
I would like to point out that these faculty promotion and substantiation cases are not only an important recognition of the achievements of individual faculty members, but also an general indication that collectively we are moving in the right direction. Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank these colleagues and all other faculty members who have been working tirelessly to make an impact on scholarship, profession as well as the community. At the same time, I would like to encourage colleagues to continue to work with high standards. I welcome colleagues to talk to me in relation to promotion and tenure matters.
Talking about scholarship, I would like to share with you that Professor Jeff Hong, Chair Professor of the Department of Economics and Finance, recently started a study group on statistical learning that is open to all faculty and research students of the College. I am much grateful that colleagues are willing to put in extra effort to enhance mutual learning. While the study group may be small, it could create big impact by influencing students’ knowledge pursuit and creating a vibrant and collegial academic atmosphere in this College. I hope we will be seeing more and more of this kind of heartwarming activities that make CB a better place to work and to learn.
As a side note, I would like to draw your attention to the recent opening of the Faculty Reading Room on the 11th floor of Academic 3. I hope this new facility will become a popular meeting place for colleagues to mingle and discuss new ideas, and contribute to promoting a collegial culture at this College.
Best regards
