Prof. Houmin Yan, Dean of the College of Business, together with Prof. Michael Yang Mengsu, Acting Head of CityU’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. Howard Wong Kai-hay, Executive Director of Life Sciences Programmes have briefed the media on CityU’s new collaboration with Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited (GPHL).

Building upon previous academic collaborations with the College, GPHL and CityU signed a framework agreement and announced the formation of a strategic alliance on 20th December. Guests attending the ceremony included Dr. Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR; Dr. Cecilia Pang Wai-bing, Biotechnology Director of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, HKSAR; and Mr. Ji Jianjun, Deputy Director-General of Education, Science and Technology Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR Government. The aim of the alliance is to pursue collaboration in areas including business, economic and financial policy research, new drugs and diagnostic and therapeutic technologies development, and the training of healthcare management professionals.

Prof. Yan emphasized that the agreement will create a win-win situation for students and businesses. In the summer of 2013, the College sent more than 30 MBA students to GPHL for a two-week residence trip in Guangzhou. Students observed GPHL’s production line and provided suggestions on branding strategies and business model development. The trip established a solid working relationship between the College and GPHL, and also enhanced business development for the corporation and expanded the students’ network for possible job opportunities in the future.

GPHL will be attending a three-day executive training programme at the College from 2nd January, 2014. This will further strengthen the College, CityU, and GPHL’s relationships, Prof. Yan added.

Under the agreement, the College will explore the possibility of establishing a China Business and Economic Development Research Centre. The centre will aim at carrying out research in regional economic development, financial policy studies and business model innovations. Another key collaboration with GPHL will be the development of executive training programmes and student internships.

Prof. Yan expressed his delight that CityU has expanded the existing connection with GPHL to the university level, benefiting the science and health care sectors. The success of the collaboration will rely on interdisciplinary contributions from the Department of Biomedical Sciences for technical development, from the College of Business for management input, and from GPHL for their specialist pharmaceutical knowledge.
