The College of Business invited Sir Chung-kong Chow, Chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) to deliver a talk to CityU EMBA students at a CEO Forum in the Connie Fan Multi-Media Conference Room on 25th March. Mr Chow shared his insights on the topic of “Trending Upwards: Hong Kong’s Future as a Global Financial Centre.”
Mr Chow discussed Hong Kong’s political and economic environment, and how its various advantages and role in the world stock market are important in helping China strengthen its financial system. Hong Kong also serves as a connecting ground for China’s financial market liberalisation.
As an international financial centre with a strategic geographical and political position, Hong Kong acts as a gateway between China and the rest of the world. Mr Chow noted that Hong Kong still retains numerous competitive advantages. It is internationally recognized as maintaining an economically and politically stable infrastructure, as well as possessing a sound legal system. Hong Kong is also favourably positioned, benefiting from both the China and global markets. For those seeking opportunities to expand their business in the Asian markets, particularly mainland China, Hong Kong would be the place to begin as it is closely intertwined with China.
Mr Chow also pointed out the challenges that Hong Kong is facing, and noted that these challenges should not be underestimated: increasing competition from neighboring countries and accelerating operating costs.
