Jointly organised by the Office of Education Development and Gateway Education (EDGE), the China Business Strategic Alliance, World Invention Intellectual Property Associations, and Creative Art and Cultural Institute, the Hong Kong Invention & Entrepreneurship Exhibition 2017 was held at CityU on 20th January.

The exhibition featured inventions and startup projects from local and international university students, and provided a platform to exchange ideas among innovators and entrepreneurs in Asia. There were 75 exhibitors from 63 booths from eight countries and cities, including Hong Kong, mainland China, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam joined the exhibition.

The event also included activities: International Student Invention Exhibition & Competition, Pitch to Fly ― a presentation session for projects from CityU, Cyberport and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks to pitch investors, and the Tea Gathering of Innopreneurs’ Fridays (TGIF).

Adam Lau Kong-shing, a Year 4 student from the Department of Marketing and the co-founder of the startup Heycoins, shared his innovative project at the TGIF. Adam’s startup idea was inspired by the coins kiosk in foreign countries. He realised that the coins exchange method in Hong Kong is not convenient enough for the public, and therefore, started working out an idea to convert coins to digital money. Cooperating with a Canadian manufacturer, Adam and his team eventually invented a coin exchange machine for people to do money exchange easier.

Adam is hoping that their coin machines can be installed in more locations, and attract more merchants to collaborate with them.

About TGIF

The monthly sharing session provides a platform for students to learn from both experienced and young entrepreneurs, and to share their startup ideas with members from the CityU community.
