CityUHK Fintech x ESG Hackathon 2024
CityU Fintech, a student-run society, organised the CityUHK Fintech x ESG Hackathon 2024, powered by Webull Securities Limited, in January. The event brought together 109 undergraduate students from CityUHK and other local universities to tackle social issues through innovative Fintech and ESG solutions.
The hackathon commenced with a Masterclass on 16 January 2024, covering topics such as trending ESG and global top 10 risks, the relationship between cybersecurity and ESG, cybersecurity across all pillars of ESG, and achieving security through a platform approach. This was followed by the Opening Ceremony and Mentor Clinics, where participants received guidance and mentorship from industry professionals. The participating teams were invited to present their ideas at the Pitching and Award Ceremony in late January, and the winning teams and individual awardees were announced on the same day.

Students join Mentor Clinics to receive guidance and mentorship from industry professionals.
Athena Ho (HKU), the Best Presenter and a member of the Most Outstanding Team, expressed her delight in winning the awards. "We are delighted to have won the Most Outstanding Team and Best Presenter Award at the CityUHK Fintech x ESG Hackathon 2024. Throughout the competition, we were immensely grateful for the support and guidance provided by our mentors, which helped us refine our idea of utilising blockchain technology for carbon trading exchanges in Hong Kong."

The CityUHK Fintech x ESG Hackathon 2024 demonstrated the potential for student-led innovations to address social challenges by integrating Fintech and ESG. Leveraging on data manipulation, AI technology, and social innovation, the hackathon fostered a community of young changemakers who sought to tackle social issues of the city while influencing global trends. The collaborative efforts between students, mentors, and corporate partners have set a precedent for CityU Fintech’s future events, encouraging continuous learning and innovation.
