The College of Business has launched the CB3020 Advanced Business Seminar series, a unique opportunity for students to connect with esteemed industry leaders. This October, the first two seminars featured Dr James Thompson, Chairman of Crown Worldwide Group, and Ms Angel Ng, Regional CEO, Greater China, Prudential PLC. Both seminars were met with overwhelming enthusiasm and curiosity, as students eagerly absorbed the wisdom shared by the speakers.

Dr James Thompson discusses his 60-year entrepreneurial journey in logistic industry.

In the first seminar on 15 October, Dr Thompson discussed his remarkable 60-year entrepreneurial journey in building a global logistics empire, highlighting his challenges and strategies to navigate financial crises. He emphasised the importance of resilience and adaptability in entrepreneurship, which inspired our business students and young entrepreneurs.

The second seminar with Ms Ng on 22 October focused on the impact of technological changes and evolving consumer behaviour. Using Blockbuster and Netflix as case studies, she illustrated how Blockbuster's failure to innovate contributed to its decline, while Netflix succeeded by adapting its business model over time. Ms Ng encouraged students to cultivate curiosity and adaptability through diverse experiences.

During the seminars, student moderators played a crucial role in facilitating discussions, allowing their peers to engage directly with the guest speakers. This experience allowed them to engage with industry leaders and gain insights into the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the business world. “I was chosen to be a student moderator, which required me to prepare thoroughly before raising any questions to the guest speaker as a representative of the students in this course. It was my first time interacting with such a prominent business leader. It was an incredible opportunity to learn from such inspiring individuals,” said Cheuk-ki So, a BBA Management student. “The insights shared were not just theoretical; they offered real-world applications that we can implement in our future careers. I will strive to maximize these opportunities and continue learning from the upcoming speakers in other advanced business seminars.”

Dean Kalok Chan welcomes the guest speakers and thanks them for their insightful sharing.

Dean Kalok Chan expressed his gratitude for the speakers, stating, “We are deeply thankful to Dr Thompson and Ms Ng for sharing their invaluable insights with our students. This is the first advanced business seminar series, which represents a significant step in inviting prominent business leaders to our campus, allowing our undergraduate students to broaden their horizons in the world of business by directly interacting with these insightful leaders. We look forward to offering more first-hand experiences from the real business world to our students in the future.”

About CB3020

The CB3020 is designed for our business students, particularly those aged 20 or younger in pursuit of their excellence for their age of the 30 and beyond. The course consists of five dynamic seminars that foster dialogue between students and industry experts. Each session features a guest speaker followed by an interactive discussion moderated by student peers, enhancing learning and networking opportunities.

Three more seminars are scheduled for November, connecting our students with prominent business leaders from Hong Kong and beyond to share their experiences, career journeys, and insights. Students are encouraged to attend these upcoming sessions to gain further insights into the business landscape.
