PhD student orientation 2024
The College of Business hosted its Orientation to welcome over 70 new PhD students on 24 September 2024.
In kicking off the event, Professor Kalok Chan, Dean of the College of Business, welcomed all new PhD students and highlighted the College's record-high recruitment numbers this year. Dean Chan also shared the College’s enhanced UTD ranking, currently 39th worldwide among top business schools based on research outputs from 2019-2023, up from 42nd based on outputs from 2018-2022. The improvement underscores the College’s dedication to nurturing students capable of contributing to the advancement of knowledge through independent and original research. Dean Chan encouraged the new students to engage with faculty members and seek their professional guidance to better plan their academic development paths.
PhD Programme Director, Professor Yangxin Yu, shared the details of PhD students graduating with the outstanding placements of Assistant Professor in the last five years, with subsequent promotion to Associate Professor. He also highlighted that some graduates had received the country’s “Excellent Young Scholar” accolade. Professor Yu introduced various awards and grants available to students, such as CB PhD Student Research & Teaching Excellence Award, PhD Conference Grants, etc. aimed at equipping new students with the resources needed to navigate their academic journey confidently.

The orientation featured sharing sessions with Dr Emmanuel Ofosu, a recent PhD graduate of the Department of Accountancy, now an Assistant Professor at Lingnan University, and Zhaobin Liu, a Year-4 PhD student of the Department of Information Systems. They shared practical tips with the new PhD students on how to navigate their research journey effectively, including strategies on preparing for the thesis proposal defense.
The College of Business looks forward to supporting the new PhD students as they embark on their academic journey, embracing challenges and celebrating achievements.
