Three PhD students from the Department of Information Systems, Dylan Junluo Chen, Zhewen Liang, and Shan Xu, have won the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) 2024, held from 15 to 18 December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The winning paper, titled “From Departure to Breach: The Impact of IT Employee Turnover on Cybersecurity Risks,” presents groundbreaking research on a critical yet often overlooked aspect of cybersecurity.

The study investigates the relationship between IT employee turnover and organisational cybersecurity risks, marking the first comprehensive examination of this issue across all levels of an organisation. This research is particularly relevant in today’s landscape of rising cyber threats and increasing mobility within the IT workforce. By enhancing the theoretical framework of cybersecurity studies, the findings offer valuable insights for organisations aiming to bolster their security measures.

Zhewen Liang expressed his excitement upon receiving the award, saying, “I am deeply honoured to receive this Best Student Paper award. This achievement would not have been possible without the supportive research environment and training provided by the CityUHK College of Business. I am also grateful to my supervisor, Professor Ben Liu, for his invaluable mentorship and guidance throughout this journey. My sincere thanks also go to my fellow research students, whose encouragement and collaborative spirit have made this journey both enriching and enjoyable. This recognition motivates me to strive for excellence in my future research endeavours.”

ICIS is renowned as the premier gathering for information systems academics and practitioners globally. With a highly selective review process and acceptance rates typically below 20%, recognition at ICIS signifies a major accomplishment within the academic community. Each year, over 1,000 leading researchers converge to share innovative findings and engage in meaningful discourse that shapes the future of information systems research.

The College of Business extends its heartfelt congratulations to the winning students and Professor Ben Liu for their contribution to advancing knowledge in cybersecurity.
