Professor Matthew K. O. Lee holds a tenured position as Chair Professor of Information Systems & E-Commerce at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). He has over 2 decades of academic and administrative leadership experience. He was Vice-President (Development and External Relations) and a member of the university's senior management team (President's Cabinet) (2015-2023). He was Associate Dean (2001-2006, 2007-2011) and Interim Dean (2006-2007) of the College of Business, CityU, and the founding Director of the CityU DBA Programme. Professor Lee was Head of the Department of Information Systems (1995-2001) and University Director of Communications and Public Relations (2009-2015) at CityU. He was also the Residence Master of Jockey Club Harmony Hall at the CityU Student Residence (2005-2011). Professor Lee was previously a faculty member at University College London (UCL), and a staff scientist at BP Research headquarters in London, UK. Professor Lee holds a first-class honors bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering, an MSc in software engineering, a Ph.D. in computer science, an MBA, and two law degrees. He is the recipient of several prestigious University scholarships and prizes, including an IEE Prize and a College Scholarship from Oxford University where he read for one of his degrees. He has also completed the Internet Law Program at Harvard Law School. Professor Lee is a qualified Barrister-at-Law in Hong Kong, England & Wales, a Chartered Engineer (UK Engineering Council), and a professional member of the British Computer Society.
Professor Lee has a research and professional interest in IT-based innovation adoption and diffusion (focusing on systems implementation management issues), knowledge management, electronic commerce, online social networks, online addiction, and the development of digital competence.
Professor Lee has published over one hundred refereed articles in international journals, conference proceedings, and research textbooks. He is the Principal Investigator of several prestigious competitive grants and has published in leading research journals (such as MIS Quarterly, Journal of MIS, Communications of the ACM, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, Decision Support Systems, Information & Management, and the Journal of International Business Studies). His research has received numerous citations and he has been rated as the most highly cited business professor at CityU for many years. Professor Lee has taken editorial roles in several leading scholarly journals including MIS Quarterly, the Information Systems Journal, and the International Journal of Information Management, among others. With a very successful grant record, Professor Lee has successfully secured and led many externally funded research projects with a total value of over HK$65 million.
According to the “H-Index for Management Information Systems” published by the University of Arizona in May 2022, Prof Lee ranks in the top 3 in Asia as an MIS professor. He has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists in his field since 2020, according to annual reports and data metrics published by Stanford University. Professor Lee is the recipient of Research.com Business and Management in China Leader Award in 2022. 2023, and 2024, being recognized as among the top 10 most influential scientists in the field of business and management in the region of Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Professor Lee has a long and distinguished record of professional and public service at a senior level. He was Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC) advising the HKSAR Government on relevant APEC-related economic and cooperation matters, and he is currently a board member of the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board, the Hong Kong Productivity Council, and a member of the Process Review Committee of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and the UGC Working Group on Research Assessment Exercise Electronic System. He has over 2 decades of corporate governance experience at the board level as an independent non-executive director of enterprises listed on the main board of the HK Stock Exchange. Professor Lee was a member of the Hong Kong Research Grant Council (RGC) Business Studies Panel (2009-2014), and an Appeal Board member under the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance. He was a founding vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Computer Society e-Business Special Interest Group and served as a member of the IT Training Committee of the Vocation Training Council. Professor Lee had also served on the IT Projects Vetting Committee of the Innovation and Technology Commission for many years.
