
Biography
Gilbert Lee is Head of Strategy and Chief of Staff to Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, Executive Chairman of Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited and Vice-Chairman of Hang Seng Bank (China) Limited. He leads corporate strategy, M&A, CE Office, mainland China business and Hang Seng Indexes.
Gilbert co-led the Bank’s record-setting RMB30Bn disposal of a top-10 commercial bank in China in 2015, and launched a Bank-sponsored social media platform for pre-college teenagers in 2018. He started the Bank's strategic partnerships including Cyberport, Hong Kong Science & Technology Park, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and City University of Hong Kong since 2019. Gilbert won for the Bank a Central Bank Digital Currency award by the HKMA in 2022 and co-authored a report on eHKD programmable payment published and endorsed by the HKMA in 2023. He was named Distinguished Chief Innovation Officer in 2024 and appointed Convenor of Hang Seng Index Advisory Committee in 2025.
Gilbert has experience working in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. Before joining Hang Seng, Gilbert led International Strategic Initiative in Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. and was responsible for strategic, cross-organizational and licensing initiatives in Asia Pacific. Gilbert co-led the Greater China Financial Services Practice in Booz & Company, where he led strategy and organizational projects for financial services clients. He spent his early career with Citigroup and Bank of America in various client management and risk management capacities.
Gilbert is a frequent speaker on strategy, innovation and GBA. He earned an MBA from INSEAD and is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA (Aust.)), a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA, FCMA), an Associate, Life Management Institute (ALMI), a Certified ESG Analyst (CESGA), a Certified Chief Innovation Officer, and a Certified Fintech Professional (Management) (CPFinT(M)).
