Tianyi has been experiencing four kinds of career: university, government, innovation institute, and industry, and has achieved remarkable achievements. From 1988 to 2000 he served as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, Dean of Business School, Vice President of Yantai University. He was one of the youngest professors at the university. From 2000-2007 he served as Deputy Mayor of Jinan City, the Capital of Shandong Province. He was one of the youngest government officials at the same level in China. From 2008 to 2009 he served as the President of Shandong Province Academy of Sciences. From 2010-2022 he worked in China Everbright Environment Group（CEE） as the general manager, CEO and chairman, and successfully led the company become the largest environmental enterprise in China and the largest waste-to-energy company in the world. Its comprehensive strength ranks among the top in the global peers.

In 2020, Tianyi was awarded the 2018-2019 “Green China Person of the Year”,  the highest award established by Chinese government in the field of Ecology and Environment. Tianyi was honored the "Best CEO in Asia" by international authoritative organizations Institutional Investor and Corporate Governance Asia for four consecutive years from 2018 to 2021. From 2022-2024 he served as Professor of Practice at HKUST(GZ).

Tianyi serves as Member, China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). He also served in the following organizations and programs: Advisory Member, the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition (BRIGC) (2018-2022); Vice Chairman, China Ecological Civilization Research and Promotion Association (2018-2022); Vice Chairman, the CAST Alliance for Ecological and Environmental Sciences and Industry (2018-2022); PPP Expert in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (2016-2022); Advisor, China Business Research Center, the National University of Singapore (2017-2022); Member of Mainland Investment and Trade Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (2011-2014); Member, Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress (2018-2023); Adjunct Professor, Co-Director of Public and Private Partnership Research Center, Tsinghua University (2016-2023).
